Every feature and shortcut of the online Java IDE

A complete tour of IntelliJ.ONLINE in 84 short entries: projects and files, the editor, navigation, search, refactoring, build and run, tests, Local History and live templates — with the keyboard shortcut for each action.

Getting started

IntelliJ.ONLINE is a complete Java IDE in the browser. Create a project and start coding in seconds — nothing to install, works on any computer, tablet or phone.

  • New project

Projects → New Project. Pick plain Java, Maven or Gradle, a JDK from 8 up and optionally sample code. New Maven and Gradle projects include JUnit 5.

  • Open a project

Click a project in the Projects list. Recent projects are sorted by the last time you opened them; use the search field to filter.

  • Project actions

The ⋮ button next to a project renames or deletes it.

  • IDE layout

Project tree on the left, editor in the centre, Run and Problems tool windows at the bottom, run configuration and Run / Build / Stop in the toolbar.

  • Project tool window

    Alt1

Show or hide the file tree.

  • Run tool window

    Alt4

    Show or hide the console.

  • Problems tool window

    Alt6

Show or hide the list of errors and warnings.

  • Maximize editor

    CtrlShiftF12

Hide every tool window and focus on code.

Project & files

Your projects live in the cloud and are available wherever you sign in. Organise files the same way you would on your own machine.

  • New class or file

    AltInsert

Inside a source root this creates a class, interface, enum, record or annotation with the right package.

  • Rename

    ShiftF6

Rename the selected file or folder. Renaming a Java class from the editor also renames its file.

  • Delete

    Delete

Delete the selected file or folder. Deleted files stay in Local History and can be restored.

  • Move

Drag files and folders in the tree, or use Move… from the context menu.

  • Upload and extract

Bring existing code in: upload files or whole archives and they are unpacked straight into the project.

  • Download

Download any file, a build artifact, or the whole project as a .zip archive.

  • Project Structure

    CtrlAltShiftS

Switch the JDK and the language level of the project.

  • External Libraries

Explore the JDK and every library your project depends on, including their source code.

Editor

An editor that understands Java: it knows your project, the JDK and your libraries, catches mistakes as you type and helps you write code faster.

  • Code completion

    CtrlSpace

Suggestions appear while you type: classes, members, keywords, live templates and automatic imports.

  • Quick documentation

    CtrlQ

Javadoc for the symbol under the caret. It also appears on hover after a short delay.

  • Go to declaration

    CtrlB CtrlClick

Jump to where a class, method or variable is declared, including JDK and library sources.

  • Find usages

    AltF7

Every usage of the symbol in the project, listed in the Find tool window.

  • Parameter info

    CtrlP

All overloads of the method being called, with the current argument highlighted.

  • Quick fixes

    AltEnter

Fixes for the problem under the caret: add an import, safe delete unused code, add JUnit 5 to the build.

  • Inspections

Compilation errors appear as you type, and unused code is greyed out so it is easy to clean up.

  • Next problem

    F2

Jump to the next error or warning in the file. The counter in the top-right corner shows the totals.

  • Previous problem

    ShiftF2

Jump back to the previous error or warning.

  • Comment line

    Ctrl/

Comment or uncomment the current line or selection.

  • Save

    CtrlS

Files are saved automatically; this saves immediately.

  • Split editor

Right-click a tab → Split and Move Right to work on two files side by side.

Refactoring & code style

Improve your code with confidence: rename, generate boilerplate and keep formatting consistent automatically.

  • Rename

    ShiftF6

Local variables, fields, methods and classes. Every occurrence is listed with a checkbox before anything changes.

  • Generate

    AltInsert

Constructor, getters, setters, getters and setters, equals() / hashCode() and toString() for the class under the caret.

  • Reformat Code

    CtrlAltL

Format with google-java-format. With a selection only those lines are formatted.

  • Optimize Imports

    CtrlAltO

Remove unused imports and sort the rest.

Build & run

Compile and run real Java applications with Maven, Gradle or plain Java. Output appears live in the console, and your program can read input from it.

  • Run

    ShiftF10

Run the active configuration. Type into the console to send input to your program.

  • Run current file or test

    CtrlShiftF10

Run the main method or the test under the caret.

  • Build project

    CtrlF9

Compile without running. Errors are marked on the right lines.

  • Stop

    CtrlF2

    Stop the running process.

  • Run configurations

    AltShiftF10

Application, JAR, Maven goals and Gradle tasks with arguments, VM options, working directory and environment variables.

  • Gutter run markers

The green arrow next to a main method or a test runs it directly.

  • Reload Maven / Gradle project

Resolve dependencies and their sources after editing pom.xml or build.gradle.

Testing

Write and run unit tests without leaving the editor — results are shown clearly, failures point straight to the code.

  • Run a test

    CtrlShiftF10

Use the gutter marker next to a test method or class.

  • Tests tab

Passed, failed and skipped tests as a tree, with failure messages and clickable stack traces.

  • Run all tests

Find Action → Run All Tests runs the whole suite.

  • Add JUnit 5

    AltEnter

In an older project, put the caret on an unresolved org.junit import and use the quick fix.

Local History

A safety net for your work: every change is saved as a version, so nothing is ever lost.

  • Show History

Right-click a tab or file → Local History. Versions are grouped by day with a diff against the current file.

  • Revert

Restore any version; the current state is saved first, so a revert can itself be undone.

  • Recent Changes

Every edited file, including deleted ones that can be restored.

  • Checkpoints

Reformat, rename and revert create labelled versions. Versions are kept for 30 days.

Live Templates

Short abbreviations that expand into common code. Type one and press Tab — and customise the list to match how you write.

  • sout · souf · soutv · serr

    Tab

Print a string, a formatted string, a value or an error.

  • psvm · main

    A main() method.

  • fori · itar · iter · whilen

Index loop, array loop, for-each loop and while loop.

  • ifn · inn · lazy

    Null checks and lazy initialization.

  • try · thr · sw

try / catch, throw new and a switch statement.

  • psf · psfs · psfi · prsf

    Constant declarations.

  • test

    A JUnit 5 test method.

  • Next field

    Tab

Move to the next template field.

  • Your own templates

Find Action → Live Templates… lets you add, edit or switch off templates. $NAME$ marks a field to fill in, $END$ the final caret position.

Settings

Make the IDE your own. Open Settings from the gear button on the Projects screen — changes apply instantly.

  • Appearance

Accent colour, interface size and corner style.

  • Editor

Font size, line spacing, line wrapping (never, on phones, always) and caret style.

  • Documentation popup

How long to hover before Javadoc appears.

  • Account

    Your nickname, email and avatar.

  • Legal

Terms, privacy, acceptable use and security policies.

Phone & tablet

The full IDE, adapted for touch. Code on the go with the same features as on a desktop.

  • Key bar

Tab, brackets, symbols and arrow keys above the on-screen keyboard; hold an arrow to repeat.

  • Horizontal scrolling

Code does not wrap — swipe sideways while line numbers stay pinned.

  • Bottom navigation

Project, Run, Problems and the terminal open as sheets you can swipe down.

  • Search button

The magnifier in the toolbar opens Search Everywhere, including every action.

Security & limits

Your code runs on our servers in a private, isolated environment — safe for you and for everyone else on the service.

  • Isolation

Every build and run is sealed off from the server and from other people’s projects. Files never leave your project.

  • Console programs

Programs talk to you through the console. Desktop windows and graphical interfaces are not available.

  • No servers or hosting

IntelliJ.ONLINE is for writing, building, testing and debugging code. Programs and tests cannot open ports, run web applications or host anything, and they have no internet access. Maven and Gradle can still download your project dependencies.

  • Fair use

Long-running processes are stopped automatically so resources stay available for everyone.

  • Browser shortcuts

Chrome and Edge keep Ctrl+N and Ctrl+Shift+N for new windows. Use Ctrl+O, Ctrl+E or Shift Shift instead. Shortcuts work with any keyboard layout.

Keyboard shortcuts

The shortcuts follow the familiar IntelliJ keymap and work with any keyboard layout. Chrome and Edge reserve Ctrl+N and Ctrl+Shift+N, so use Ctrl+O, Ctrl+E or Shift Shift instead.
