Terms of Service

Effective · Version 2026-10-15

The agreement for using IntelliJ.ONLINE: an independent online Java IDE provided as is, where the one responsibility we fully accept is keeping the data we hold secure.

1. Agreement

  1. 1.1

    These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a binding agreement between you and the operator of IntelliJ.ONLINE ("we", "us", "our") about your use of the Service.

  2. 1.2

    The Privacy Policy, the Acceptable Use Policy and the Security Policy are part of these Terms. Together they form the "Agreement". If documents conflict, these Terms prevail, except that the Privacy Policy prevails on how personal data is handled.

  3. 1.3

    You accept the Agreement when you create an account by confirming the consent checkbox at registration, and every time you use the Service. If you do not accept it, do not create an account and do not use the Service.

  4. 1.4

    If you use the Service on behalf of a school, company or other organisation, you confirm that you are authorised to accept the Agreement for it, and both you and the organisation are bound by it.

  5. 1.5

    The English version of the Agreement is the binding one. Translations, if any, are for convenience only.

2. Definitions

  1. 2.1
    1. 2.1.1

      "Service" — IntelliJ.ONLINE as a whole: the home site at intellij.online and www.intellij.online, the workspace at workspace.intellij.online (sign-in, projects, the IDE and Contact Support), the API at gateway.intellij.online, and any other address, software or feature we provide under the IntelliJ.ONLINE name;

    2. 2.1.2

      "Account" — your registered user account and everything stored in it;

    3. 2.1.3

      "Your Content" — code, files, archives, project settings, messages, attachments and any other material you create, upload or send through the Service;

    4. 2.1.4

      "Programs" — anything the Service compiles, builds, tests, runs or debugs for you, including build scripts and the tools they start;

    5. 2.1.5

      "Contact Support" — the support section of the workspace where you open tickets and talk to our staff;

    6. 2.1.6

      "Administrators" — the people authorised by the operator to run the Service, including those who answer tickets as "Support Agent".

3. Independence and trademarks

  1. 3.1

    IntelliJ.ONLINE is an independent service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored or operated by JetBrains s.r.o., Oracle Corporation, the Eclipse Foundation, the Apache Software Foundation, Gradle Inc. or any other vendor whose software it uses.

  2. 3.2

    IntelliJ and IntelliJ IDEA are trademarks of JetBrains s.r.o. Java and OpenJDK are trademarks of Oracle and/or its affiliates. Other names and logos belong to their owners and are used only to describe compatibility.

  3. 3.3

    An IntelliJ.ONLINE account is separate from any JetBrains account. We never ask for your JetBrains, Google, GitHub or any other third-party password, and the Service never offers to sign you in with them. If a page asks for such credentials in our name, it is not us — report it through Contact Support.

4. The Service

  1. 4.1

    IntelliJ.ONLINE is an online development environment for writing, building, running, testing and debugging Java projects in a web browser, with Maven, Gradle and plain Java project types, several JDK versions, local file history and a support chat.

  2. 4.2

    We decide what the Service includes and how it works. We may add, change, limit, suspend or remove any feature, address, limit or plan at any time, with or without notice. Notable changes are announced in What's New in the workspace.

  3. 4.3

    Parts of the Service are free of charge. We may introduce paid plans or paid features. Paid terms apply only if you choose them, and the price and conditions will be shown to you before you pay.

  4. 4.4

    The Service is under active development and may contain errors. We do not promise any availability, response time, performance or level of support.

5. Eligibility

  1. 5.1

    You must be at least 16 years old, or older if the law where you live requires a higher age to use online services without parental consent.

  2. 5.2

    You may not use the Service if we have previously closed or blocked your account, or if the law, sanctions or export controls prohibit us from providing it to you or prohibit you from using it.

6. Your account

  1. 6.1

    You register with a nickname, an email address and a password. The details you give must be accurate and the email address must be yours.

  2. 6.2

    One person, one account. You may not share, lend, sell or transfer an account, use someone else's account, or create additional accounts to get around a limit, a cooldown, a block or a closure.

  3. 6.3

    Registration from the same network is limited to protect the Service from automated sign-ups. We may refuse a registration or a nickname that impersonates someone, misleads others or is offensive, and we may rename it.

  4. 6.4

    You are responsible for keeping your password secret and for everything done with your account. Sign-in sessions last up to 30 days on each device unless you sign out earlier.

  5. 6.5

    For security we may sign your account out on all devices, ask you to change your password, set a new password at your request, or temporarily restrict the account. If you lose access, contact us through Contact Support from another account or the contact details we publish; we may ask you to prove that the account is yours.

7. Your content

  1. 7.1

    Your Content remains yours. We claim no ownership of it.

  2. 7.2

    You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, copy, process, transmit, compile, build, run, back up and display Your Content to you, solely to provide, secure and support the Service. The licence ends when Your Content is deleted from the Service and from backups.

  3. 7.3

    You are solely responsible for Your Content and for what your Programs do. You confirm that you have all rights needed to use Your Content in the Service and that it does not break the law, the rights of others or the Acceptable Use Policy.

  4. 7.4

    We do not sell Your Content, we do not use it for advertising and we do not use it to train machine-learning models.

  5. 7.5

    Do not store secrets you cannot afford to lose control of — real passwords, private keys, API tokens or personal data of other people — in project files, messages or attachments.

  6. 7.6

    Keep your own copies of anything important. You can download single files or whole projects as .zip archives at any time.

8. Access by our staff

  1. 8.1

    We do not routinely read, review or monitor Your Content.

  2. 8.2

    Administrators may open your account, projects, files, file history, build output, tickets and attachments only when it is needed to:

    1. 8.2.1

      answer a ticket you opened, or investigate a problem you reported;

    2. 8.2.2

      investigate a security event, a blocked sandbox action, suspected abuse or a breach of the Agreement;

    3. 8.2.3

      keep the Service running, repair data or recover from an incident;

    4. 8.2.4

      comply with the law or a binding request from a competent authority.

  3. 8.3

    Such access is limited to what the task requires and is recorded in the Service's activity log.

9. Building and running code

  1. 9.1

    Programs run on our servers, never on your device, inside isolated environments with limits on time, memory, processes, storage, output and network access. The current limits are listed in the Security Policy and may change at any time.

  2. 9.2

    Programs started with Run, Debug or tests have no internet access. Build tools may download dependencies only from public package repositories — the well-known ones and those declared in your build files. Servers, web applications, open ports and graphical windows are not supported.

  3. 9.3

    We may stop, refuse or restrict any build or Program at any time, in particular when it exceeds a limit, endangers the Service or breaks the Acceptable Use Policy.

  4. 9.4

    Files that your builds and Programs create inside the project may be saved back into the project automatically. Build output can be cleared by you or by us at any time.

  5. 9.5

    We do not guarantee that a build or Program will start, finish or produce correct results, or that a toolchain version will stay available.

10. Storage and limits

  1. 10.1

    Accounts are subject to limits on the number of projects, files, file sizes and storage space, described in the Security Policy. We may set different limits for individual accounts.

  2. 10.2

    When a limit is reached, saving, uploading, builds or new projects may pause until you free space. Exceeding limits on purpose or getting around them is not allowed.

11. Contact Support

  1. 11.1

    You can open tickets in Contact Support to report bugs, ask questions or suggest improvements. Tickets are private conversations between you and Administrators, who reply as "Support Agent" on behalf of IntelliJ.ONLINE.

  2. 11.2

    Support is provided on a best-effort basis. We do not promise a reply, a reply time or a particular outcome, and advice given in support is provided as is.

  3. 11.3

    We may close or delete a ticket at any time. A closed ticket stays in your list, but its conversation and attachments are no longer available to you. A deleted ticket is erased together with its messages and attachments and disappears from your list. Open a new ticket if you need further help.

  4. 11.4

    The number of open tickets, new tickets per day, attachments and their size are limited. Do not send secrets, malicious files, spam or abusive messages through support.

12. Third-party software and services

  1. 12.1

    The Service uses and downloads third-party software, including JDK distributions (such as Eclipse Temurin and Azul Zulu), Apache Maven, Gradle, the Eclipse JDT Language Server, google-java-format and libraries from public package repositories. Each is provided under its own licence, which you must follow when you use it.

  2. 12.2

    The Service relies on third-party infrastructure such as our hosting provider and Cloudflare. We do not control third-party software, repositories or services and accept no responsibility for their content, availability, licences or security.

13. Our rights

  1. 13.1

    The Service, its software, design, texts, logos and branding belong to us or our licensors. The Agreement gives you only the right to use the Service as allowed here.

  2. 13.2

    You may not copy, resell, sublicense, frame, mirror, scrape, decompile or reverse engineer the Service, its client code or its encrypted interfaces, access it by automated means other than the user interface, or use it to build a competing product, except where the law expressly allows it despite this restriction.

  3. 13.3

    If you send us feedback, ideas or suggestions, we may use them freely, without restriction and without any obligation to you.

14. Blocking, suspension and termination

  1. 14.1

    You may stop using the Service at any time. To close your account and delete its data, open a ticket in Contact Support under Account & storage.

  2. 14.2

    We may limit features, stop Programs, remove content, block an account, sign it out everywhere, close it, or stop providing the Service in whole or in part, at any time and for any reason, including a breach of the Agreement, a risk to the Service, to other users or to third parties, a legal requirement, or prolonged inactivity. Where practical and lawful, we will tell you; a blocked account sees a notice when it signs in.

  3. 14.3

    We may delete accounts that have not been used for 24 months.

  4. 14.4

    When an account is closed, the right to use the Service ends and the account data is deleted as described in the Privacy Policy.

  5. 14.5

    Provisions that by their nature should survive termination — including responsibility for Your Content, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnity, governing law and the licence to keep backups until they expire — continue to apply.

15. Backups and data loss

  1. 15.1

    We keep a limited number of automatic backups of our database for disaster recovery only. They are not a service for you: we do not restore individual files, projects or versions on request, and we do not guarantee that a backup exists or can be restored.

  2. 15.2

    You are responsible for keeping your own copies of Your Content.

16. No warranties

  1. 16.1

    THE SERVICE, ITS CONTENT, SUPPORT AND EVERYTHING PROVIDED THROUGH IT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY.

  2. 16.2

    TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, AVAILABILITY, SECURITY, AND THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE OR FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS.

  3. 16.3

    Do not rely on the Service for production systems, safety-critical, regulated, medical, financial or business-critical work, or as the only place where Your Content is stored.

17. Responsibility and limitation of liability

  1. 17.1

    The one responsibility we fully accept is to protect the data we hold about you and your projects with reasonable technical and organisational measures, as described in the Privacy Policy and the Security Policy, and to act on a security incident that affects that data.

  2. 17.2

    TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR:

    1. 17.2.1

      loss, corruption, disclosure by you, or unavailability of Your Content or any other data, including loss caused by errors, limits, maintenance, outages, account closure or the end of the Service;

    2. 17.2.2

      the behaviour, output or consequences of code you write, build or run, or of dependencies and tools it uses;

    3. 17.2.3

      interruptions, delays, errors, bugs, slowness or unavailability of the Service or any of its addresses;

    4. 17.2.4

      third-party software, repositories, networks, services or content;

    5. 17.2.5

      actions or content of other users, or of anyone who uses your account;

    6. 17.2.6

      advice, answers or their absence in Contact Support;

    7. 17.2.7

      any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or loss of profits, revenue, business, data, goodwill or opportunity.

  3. 17.3

    TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE OR THE AGREEMENT IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM. IF YOU PAID NOTHING, OUR LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO ZERO.

  4. 17.4

    These limits apply whatever the legal basis of the claim and even if we were told of the possibility of the damage. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations; there, our liability is limited to the smallest extent the law permits, and nothing in the Agreement excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, including for wilful misconduct or gross negligence where such an exclusion is prohibited.

18. Indemnity

  1. 18.1

    You agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless us and our Administrators from any claims, demands, damages, losses, fines and costs, including reasonable legal fees, arising from Your Content, your Programs, your use of the Service or of your account, or your breach of the Agreement, the law or the rights of others.

19. Intellectual property complaints

  1. 19.1

    We respect the rights of others and remove or disable material that we reasonably believe infringes them. Accounts of repeat infringers are closed.

  2. 19.2

    To report infringing material, open a ticket in Contact Support with: the work you believe is infringed, where the material is in the Service (for example the project or ticket ID), your contact details, a statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised, and a statement that the information in the report is accurate and that you are the rights holder or authorised to act for them.

  3. 19.3

    We may share a report with the user concerned. Knowingly false reports are a breach of this Agreement.

20. Changes to the Agreement

  1. 20.1

    We may change the Agreement at any time. The current version and its effective date are always published on these pages.

  2. 20.2

    Material changes are announced in the workspace, for example in What's New. Changes apply from the date they are published. If you continue to use the Service after that date, you accept the changed Agreement. If you do not accept it, stop using the Service and you may ask us to close your account.

21. Governing law and disputes

  1. 21.1

    The Agreement and any dispute about it or the Service are governed by the law of the country where the operator is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.

  2. 21.2

    The courts of that country have exclusive jurisdiction, unless mandatory consumer law gives you the right to bring proceedings where you live. Before going to court, please contact us through Contact Support so we can try to resolve the matter.

22. General

  1. 22.1

    If any part of the Agreement is found invalid or unenforceable, it is limited to the minimum extent necessary and the rest remains in effect.

  2. 22.2

    Our failure or delay in enforcing a right is not a waiver of it.

  3. 22.3

    You may not assign or transfer your rights or obligations under the Agreement. We may transfer ours, including as part of a merger, acquisition, reorganisation or sale of the Service.

  4. 22.4

    We are not liable for any failure or delay caused by events outside our reasonable control, including failures of providers, networks or power, attacks, disasters and actions of authorities.

  5. 22.5

    We may send you notices in the Service or to the email address of your account. You can reach us through Contact Support.

  6. 22.6

    The Agreement is the entire agreement between you and us about the Service and replaces any earlier agreement on the same subject.
